Freelancing Tips – Handling the Difficult Clients

Making it clear that you are not their slave

The first thing that you need to do is to make it clear that you are not their slave. You will be surprised but some clients can become very rude even with freelancers, never knowing how good they actually are. If the client behaves in the same way towards you, tell him/her that you are not his/her slave and that they should treat you as a freelancer. At the end, your life is what matters to you, you have worked hard throughout the day to reach where you have reached today and these clients need to know it.

Making sure that money is being paid on time

If a client does not pay you on time, you need to make sure that proper steps are taken. You can take the help of your bank in this case to block the money transfer done by the client, so whenever they try sending money, it will be blocked. Keep doing this until the payment is made. Sometimes, people delay their payments because they have some financial problems but try to make sure that you create a sense of urgency in them. At the same time, do not push them too hard because it is difficult for them as well.

Understanding their situation and being considerate

While you cannot be a slave to your client, what matters most in business is understanding the other person’s perspective, no matter which side they are on. Try finding a way in which both of you can come out with a situation that works for both of you. At the end, it is business and not personal so try to be as much considerate as possible while dealing with this kind of clients.

Pushing them back gently

If you feel like your client is trying to cross the limits, do not release them immediately. Try pushing them back gently so that they know what you can and cannot do. If they ask for something extra or if they want some changes to be done in your work without charging any extra money, it is advisable to say no as politely as possible.

Doing some research on your own

It is advisable for freelancers to do some research on their own and find out as to how others are dealing with such clients. If you can find someone whose advice you can take regarding handling difficult clients, it is an added advantage. You will be able to make the most of your time if you know what needs to be done in a particular situation.

More than anything, you need to understand the fact that there are difficult clients everywhere and one needs to learn how to handle them. [ARTICLE END]
