According to a recent report by Intuit, 34 percent of American workers were engaged in some type of independent work in 2015, totaling nearly 54 million people across the nation.

Sara Horowitz, founder and executive director for Freelancers Union, said that “the new workforce is made up of tech-savvy and educated people that want flexibility in their jobs,” which explains why so many people are turning toward online freelancing sites to find job opportunities.

In fact, online freelancers now make up 36% of the global workforce today, compared to only 3% in 2005.

This is truly a remarkable statistic, as it shows how online freelancing has quickly become the “way” for companies and individuals to complete work. Moreover, as time goes on and these websites such as [name of website] and Elance gain even more steam, this 36% will most likely increase drastically over the next few years.

According to Ed Diener, author of Happiness: Unlocking The Mysteries Of Psychological Wealth, there are five key components that make up our happiness levels- financial wealth, health, relationships/social connectivity/love, meaning/purpose/personal growth/accomplishment ,and freedom of choice.

People engaged in online freelancing are included in categories three (relationships/social connectivity/love) and five (freedom of choice), since they have a flexible schedule and don’t rely on one company for their income.

This means that online freelancers are much happier than those who work for companies, since they derive happiness across two key aspects of happiness- relationships and freedom to choose what you want to do each day.

Employees working for companies only achieve the latter, which is why many employees struggle with feeling fulfilled at their jobs.

As more people begin to freelance online, it could also introduce new issues in both the workplace and society as a whole. For instance, if too much power lies in the hands of too few “employers” (i.e., business owners who own these online freelancing websites), we could see a top-heavy society where the rich get richer and the poor stagnate in their situation.

Along with this, it could also become increasingly difficult for people to find jobs if companies decide to hire only freelance workers and not full-time employees (like many already do today). This could cause inequality among people who can’t “afford” to work as freelancers yet.

When asked about the future of online freelancing, Horowitz said “workers want more control over their lives and companies need to meet them in that place.”

This means that there is an incredible opportunity for both employees and employers if they just sit down and figure out a way to work together.

When asked about what could be done to promote online freelancing even more , Horowitz said “I think people should work with each other more than against each other.”

This is absolutely true- if employees and employers sit down together and figure out ways for both parties to benefit (rather than only one), everyone wins . It’s hard to imagine anything better than that.

For corporations, they can save money on health insurance costs while getting work done quickly and efficiently. They can work with a flexible schedule, hire a freelancer for as long as they need to complete a project, and then stop hiring that person once they’re done.
